Description:

Part of the Amazing Animals series showcasing animals in their native habitats, this book introduces early readers and read-aloud audiences to the shaggy bison of the American plains. Readers will learn that some bison “weigh more than 2,000 pounds” and that they can “run up to 35 miles (56 km) per hour over a short space.”

Each page describes a particular aspect of the bison’s body, behaviour or habitat in a few short, straightforward sentences that facilitate reading and/or the gathering of data for school projects. The main text employs a large black font while new or unfamiliar vocabulary words are printed in boldface type and defined at the bottom of the page.

The bordered spreads consist of spare text on a white page accompanied by large coloured close-up photographs. One section provides an illustration of stampeding bison and explains how bands of 20 to 60 animals come together to make a herd of hundreds or thousands. Complementary facts, details or definitions are italicized and set apart for easy reference.

The book includes a story from American Indian folklore explaining why bison have humps, as well as a page of bibliographical references and an index.
